In the midst of the lockdown, the feelings of despair from small local businesses are becoming palpable. The economy has come to a screeching halt and it is mainly small businesses paying the price.
I recently read that behind every small business, there is a family. But it is not true. It is because behind every small business, there are several families. And these families are nervous, worried and stressed. These families are our neighbours, our friends and our community.
As with most debilitating tragedies, we ask ourselves: “What can one person really do?” The answer is #justbuy1.
Start now and keep it going with at least one (more is obviously better) local purchase. If each of us makes it a point to #justbuy1 item from a local small business, we will be able to make a massive collective impact. In level 4 lockdown, this means:
#justbuy1 piece of winter clothing that is produced locally
#justbuy1 item of stationery from that stationery shop where you know the owner
#justbuy1 meal for delivery from that cosy little restaurant that now delivers
#justbuy1 item of hardware from that independent hardware store
#justbuy1 item from a local food manufacturer
We, as consumers, have more power than we realise. Use this power wisely. Make a difference. It is easy. It makes sense. It matters.
Take a picture.
Tag the business.
Let’s make this our new lockdown challenge!
Let’s show these small businesses, these families who are our neighbours, our friends, our community, just how much we care!
